Trail Maintenance Day, Wednesday, September 7, 2005 is that special day each year where we have the opportunity to contribute back to the forest we have enjoyed so much during the year.  Please join us!  Click here for more details and call ReNae (634-2382) or Bob (after Sept 4, 634-2655) for further information.

Monthly newsletters seem to be occurring regularly this summer season and all sorts of interesting information is included in each issue, so this wise webmaster is going to allow you to download each newsletter in a pdf format and read it directly.  You need Adobe Acrobat Reader to do this, but you probably have that installed on your computer, so simply click on the Newsletter below and enjoy!

The overnight trip to Grassy Mountain Lakes (July 19, 2005) was absolutely beautiful and a great time was had by everyone.  Click here to read more!

Vreny Middleton has recently returned from her home country of Switzerland with photos and an article to share with us!  Click here to see her story and photographs.  Thanks, Vreny!

From the 2005 President, ReNae Bradfield:  "Thanks to all the members for your support.  I know that I have some big shoes to fill following Susan Waters as President and Founder.  I feel fortunate, however, that all the current board members and hike leaders are still in their positions and that Susan is now the trail coordinator.  The club has grown and we are now a year-round organization.  Looking forward to a fabulous season..."

The end of the summer 2004 hiking season social was held at the home of Hal Wiking on September 28, 2004.  A great time was had by all who attended.  Besides the delicious food contributed by the members, laughs were shared as our outgoing President gave special awards to hikers:

  • Lori Swanson received the ceramic turtle award for her ability to slide on her backside down the snow bank above Boulder Lake .

  • Gay Foster was awarded a compass to assist her in staying on the marked trails.

  • The Trail Trash trophy, designed and constructed by Hal Wiking from a variety of items found on various trails was presented to “Hiker of the Year” Bud Keys

  • Club members voted to select the hiker they believed to be the most outstanding as far as endurance, knowledge, dedication, and trail etiquette are concerned.  Congratulations, Bud !!!

  • President Susan Waters presented earrings made from pieces of Crystal Mountain rocks by Kirsten Wiking to those who had served as officers during her term.

  • The Club members gave outgoing President Susan Waters a picture print of Mt. Moran in the Tetons entitled “On The Way Up” along with their tremendous thanks for starting the club and serving as President for two years.

  • In absentia, new President ReNae Bradfield was sworn in by the passing of the well worn and well used Forest Service Map of the McCall area.

We have a New Club President,  ReNae Bradfield has graciously accepted the position for 2005 and we thank her very much.  She will be installed at the September 24, 2004 social.  All of the officers will remain in their present positions to give her their support and Susan will become Trail Coordinator.

Vote for the Hiker of the SeasonAward to be presented at the September 24, 2004 Social.
Email your vote to Hal by clicking here.   Or Mail to Hal Wiking at P.O. Box 2304 , McCall , ID 83638
The Award will be our "Trail Trash Award."  The award will become a perpetual trophy with a new name added every year.  (Couples with 2 memberships have 2 votes)

See the new Wildflower Photo Gallery.  Thanks to Betty Derig for identification of the flowers!

Adopt a Trail and September 8 Trail Maintenance Day Report-- we gave back to our forest!  19 of us worked on clearing the brushy and overgrown Hazard Creek Falls Trail on September 8, 2004.  Many thanks go to Bob Bechaud for organizing the effort and making sure that we got the job done (see his clean-up plan here).  Thanks to Helmi and Susan for providing the wonderful sandwiches from Heartland Deli!

Trail Maintenance Day, 2004

The Payette National Forest has 2,100 miles of trails and over 2.2 million acres.  On July 5 Al Becker spoke to our club about adopting a hiking trail.  While interest is strong, our club has decided to become a “Friend of the Forest ” while continuing to consider adopting a trail at a later date.

On  August 24 and 25 the club visited a section of the Historic Lolo Trail Corridor & Bicentennial Lewis & Clark Trail  It was WET but good fun, according to those who braved our wet weather that week...Overnight options were the Lochsa Lodge, the Powell campground, and camping along the trail.  See detailed hike schedule and more info here.  Links to websites with further trail information can be found under Lewis and Clark here.

Lessons from the Loon Lake overnight camping on July 21B-23 Dragon Bomber, crashed at Loon Lake 1943: Photo by Sheree Sonfield

Food is important. (Gourmet, not dried)

Since water filters make good drinking water, carry wine instead of water.

Have a tent large enough to accommodate your body size.

Camp fires are good. Overnight hiking is good.

Bonus points if you can answer this question correctly:

Crawling out of the tent in the morning, with hair askew, who said the following:

“Whose idea was this anyway?” President and Founder, Susan Waters

2 Pontoon Boats and a motor boat gave all of us a safe and fun passage to North Beach on the Sunday, July 25 pontoon boat social - wine & appetizers on the lake.   Thank you Captains ReNae, Leslie and Hal!

The McCall Hiking Club June Pot Luck Party was great fun!  Thanks go to Nancy Harvey for hosting the party and to everyone who contributed such good fare.
