Overnighting

by Sheree Sonfield

July, 2005

The full moon, perfect blue skies, cool and clear evenings and good company of 8 were just a few of the really nice things about backpacking into Grassy Mountain Lakes for 2 nights in mid-July.  We also had time to visit or view 3 other lakes:  Coffee Cup, Morgan and Frog, as well as to hike above the Grassy Lakes for the view.  We ate fresh fish from Coffee Cup as appetizers - 1 of the fish was over 12" long!  Yum...

The hike into the camping spot was only about an hour, but it is remote enough that we saw only 2 people on horseback during out entire trip, other than our hiking club hikers. How blessed we are in this Idaho paradise of ours!

Since a few of us have stoves, water filters and other gear, you wouldn't need much to camp with us:

        Sleeping bag and pad

        Tent

        Backpack

        Good attitude

We've also camped at Loon Lake, which is also a very special place to see in the early evening or morning.

So, come along next time and share our special part of paradise!

Hiking

by Betty B. Derig

June, 2004

Almost unnoticed, hiking has become a major American sport.  It's non competitive, healthful, spirit lifting, and peaceful.  It's not exclusive and almost anyone can do it.

Beauty of the Weiser River Trails: Photo by Sheree SonfieldIn the McCall Hiking Club, we choose trails that traverse spectacular alpine scenery; typically, a path that winds through a green corridor lined with pines and firs, wild berries and native flowers.  On a hike to Hard Creek Falls, we enjoyed an additional bonus - the white water rush of Hazard Creek that played Water Music all the way.

We chat as we hike along, often recalling other hikes such as the long one to Loon Lake.  The day was hot.  Most of us ran short of water.  Others shared, and we bonded in a spirit of comeraderie and friendship.  We're a diverse group of adults with only hiking in common, but along the trail, everyone helps everyone else.

We also enjoy eating and have great parties and pot-lucks.  What a well-rounded sport! I think we can agree with Shakespeare that, "Nature makes the whole world kin."
